While playing at a local music festival with my gigging band Fenrir, I was invited to join a locally based music community web site.The site has been set up to advertise gigs and to get local musicians talking to each other but I have to say it's quite neat.
Each member is permitted to upload 100 tracks so I have posted a load of my old stuff,some ex-band material and some of my F-jam collaborations.

Beware IAC was attacked by a Chinese virus whose name I cant remember but it has also been attacking a lot of other sites. The site has been down for over a week while they update the site, repair the damage and increase security.

I just got the news a couple of days ago that Funender.com is no more. It was the main host for my music since 2004. Then it had 2000 members. Toward the end it had exceeded its membership to over 30,000. All good things come to and end I suppose, but I really feel gutted.

A big thanks to "FuN" who was the founder and administrator of a really cool community that I had the pleasure of being a part of. It's due to the feedback from members there that i feel I've gotten better to some degree in the procceses of composing and production.

They say as one door closes another one opens so there is only one way to look, and thats ahead, but I tell ya, it was a blast there.

Have you seen the new Martin Scorsese film about the Rolling Stones concert at Beacon, New York. The film has been critisized for not having enough footage of their personal lives but the film of the concert was really great and Mick Jagger really rocked the house down. He seems better at 62 than he was when he was younger. A must see.

I've had problems with Microsoft IE browser not working properly with cookies... So I went and downloaded OPERA browser http://www.firefox.com, and I've been using it. What a breath of fresh air this is over using IE. I've not had a single problem. Opera seems to be more secure too from what I've been reading. I've been reading the IE is not really that secure. How did these people (MS) get to be so big?

Google, and it's related services (googlegroup, orkut, blogger), has become a breeze to use now that I've changed browsers. If you are having problems with always having to login to use google services and you are using IE, that is probably your problem.

This very short concert is very special. Amy starts off rather self consciously nervous of the venue and cameras but her fantastic songs soon power through with that brilliant Scottish accent.A very simple and effective band set up and a very powerful voice.

I'm trying out the orkut forum system that google has provided for us. Notice the "Forums" option on the menu at the top of the page here. You have to join each forum that you want to post in. Once you join you can post at will as long as you are logged in. I'm pondering a simple setup. It seems like a fairly decent system, it's free, and has e-mail notifications. Let us know what you think of it and any problems you see with it.

My sister who's a big hifi fan invited me yesterday to come and listen
to a hifi she's thinking of buying and when she buys she buys big.

I took a few cds with me and on one was Coming Home and let me tell
you it was the best i've ever heard it...so sweet so well sung,produced
and the song was taken to another level. The vocals and instruments
were....i cant think of words.....just..... and Freddie your drums were
.........spot on......DirgeK....vocals.....even the guy in shop was
mesmorised......we loved it.....total price for the hifi was
10,000 uk pounds.........she's undecided about buying but

New Streaming Features Added

We've added an exciting new feature to the system here. It's a streaming system that works with PC, and Mac, and it's automated (once it's setup). It might change as we develop it, but for now, take a look at the "Latest Mixes", area near the bottom of this page. It's just above the "File Manager". The first track listed there gives you a good idea how this works...

In a nutshell this allows us to browse the projects all from one listing, and lets us stream the "Latest Mix", imediately from that list. When you click the title a graphic shows on the left with bigger (easier to view), information about the project (while you listen). Just below the graphic is a link to open the project page. best of all this is automatic, and the owner of the project can easily update what track plays on there, and what the graphic says... Right from the File Manager. The "Features List" at the top of this new listing tells about this more indepth.

The streaming and downloadable "Latest Mix" will show on the status update area, and is also updated from the File Manager. It's actually quite simple. If you upload a file with the proper name, it'll show in these areas. Replace the file with that name in the file manager, and update the latest mixes for people to browse.

No more waiting to download to browse.

We have more planned with this new streaming technology. I've already had good success with having the entire folder of files stream. If you upload an mp3, it's streamable imediately. Just a few details to iron out.

This means it just got easier to browse and listen to the latest mixes... That is once I finish setting this all up. There are some features I'm still working on setting up. As I said this may change as we go. I've tested this with Anne (who is a Mac user), and it streams for her fine. So it's compatible with everyone!

PC Problem

Hi all. I hope someone can help me out. I've just upgraded my DDR Ram from 1 gig to 4 gig. The guy at the store said it might not take it but the computer did recognize the new installed hardware so he said it would work fine. I get home load up Cubase and open a project that I'm working on. Then Cubase becomes very very slow, becomes wonky when trying to navigate the menus and freezes up on me. Anyone got any ideas? I think I may have to take it back to the music shop were I got it from. The guys who did the upgrade were just a regular pc store. Helppppp!

Any see Daughtry on Soundstage recently? That's the first time I've seen him with his band, and I must say I was impressed! I would bet he looks back at not winning idol, and kinda laughs about it now. He sure has proven to be a force to be rekoned with. Wonder what happened to Taylor Hicks after winnign that? I thought Taylor was pretty good, but Daughtry kinda proves there is a whole lot more to this talent thing than can be shown on the idol show. I've heard some of Taylor's music on his album, and I was kinda disappointed by the writing. I sure don't say that about Daughtry. Chris has really proven his talent. Great show! I'm a fan!

Googlegroups Editor System is back online now

Well as most of you active members have been well aware of, the F-Jam googlegroups project pages have been offline for updates. We were getting errors when we tried to update the status of a project. It's been that way for nearly two weeks. Well tonight I realized they came back and are now functional.

I guess this meanst that even the largest search engine in the world has it's problems. The thing is that I as administrator developed a similar system using the F-Jam facility. Similar, but actually better, in that in the new system, the project status is shown on the same page as the files, and discussions. This has an advantage over the googlegroup system, in that it's all on one page. No need to jump to a different page to update the status.

So I have an idea of how we can use the new system and keep the googlegroup in place in case the new system fails in the future. We could go back to the googlegroup for status pages in that event. We'll use it as a backup system. So I'm slowly setting all the projects up on the new system. The most active projects will get setup first.

I never got a single response from google on this. Just silence and then two weeks later after I found an alternative, they came back online...

Ah well, I guess that's what we can expect for free huh? Anyhow it's back. I had come up with a way to divert new members away from those projects altogether and send them to the new, and I was getting redy to put this work around in place when I realized it's back...

View Latest JukeBox Activity

We've added an option that shows the latest activity at the F-Jam Online Studios Finished Tracks Jukebox. You'll find this under "Jukebox", then "View Latest Jukebox Activity" on the Main Menu above here. This will keep track of any new additions to the jukebox (wether newly completed, or from the archives). This will also show any new comments made under any existing song. There is also a link on that page to signup and subscribe to this via e-mail (meaning it'll come to your e-mail when something new is posted).

I used to play guitar and sing in the 70's for several years, at 18 we were redy to cut a demo... but this girl came along and I married her and completely left music, sold my guitar and didn't sing or play musc again. I still have the same girl and now after having two brothers with cancer at a young age, I can see how limited our lease is on this life. After discovering CDG's I picked up a mic and fell in love all over again, only now it is even better then before. I can cover about 500 songs well as long as I have the lyrics in front of me and it keeps growing every day. I decited that it is time for me to start focusing on certain songs (so I remember the lyrics) writing some of my own and searching for some others works wherein I can develop somthing with them. I am a classic rocker and can cover anything from Barry White (and a little deeper) to Sticks & Bon Jovi. I also like music from other genera's including country R&B and Hip Hop. I like much of the newer music from 3 Doors Down and some others. I have a very good voice and range and can sound like the artist I cover ...verry good with Elton John, John Lennon, Beatles and so on. I have a website still under construction and will provide it later. I intend to do some shows out after I assemble a cd or two and have somthing to sell. I would like to try some others music for possible use on my cd and site, with the proper royalty agreements, of course. I am just getting back into the guitar and play mostly rhytham for now. I look forward providing vocal's for some of your music. Peace to all.

New comments upgrade

Hi guys-

Just a little bit of background on a problem that I think we've solved as of today. Jill was asking me how she could keep up with what is new on this discussion blog, without having to go and subscribe to every topic (including older ones). She spoke of the ability of other blogs to bing topics with recent comments to the top of the blog, so she knows. As you know this blogging doesn't have that option. If an older topic has a comment and you are not subscribed to it, you will not know. She is right about this. So after some thought I came up with an answer for this. It seems to have worked like a charm, and has fixed a problem I had as admin at the same time. I won't go into any real details other than to say we are using a combination of the googlegroups, and the F-Jam server php scripts.

Here is a more detailed listing of what this change has brought about. On this blog under "Discussion" on the menu, and then under "View Latest", you get a new window that opens and shows you the "Last 10 Topics Posted". Under that is "Recent Comments". This is the new part. This will show you the last comments made to any discussion blog topic, both old and new, wether you are subscribed to it or not. The newest topics will be at the top of this list too, just as Jill asked for. You will be reading from newest to oldest. So you if you read backwards, you will know when you get to the comments you've already seen, and can stop and consider yourself up to date. Another added bonus is that you can now click into that googlegroup that is linked at the top of the comments and subscribe to that group and have these very same comments delivered to you via e-mail if you wanted. You'd effectively get e-mail for ALL new comments by subscribing to this google group. This lists the last 50 comments on this page, and is automatically updated.

Likewise the same thing is true of "View Latest Project Activity", under "Music Projects". it doesn't show any in there just yet, because we just finished setting this up, but you'll soon be able to monitor project activity from this page, wether you are subscribed to it or not. You can still subscribe as you have been doing. This is something I've setup on the side, for those of you who feel they want to keep up more with what's going on.

I'm going to be setting up yet another one to monitor comments made on the jukebox. You can either read this page or subscribe to the group that is linked on the page and get e-mails. I have a little more in store too but that can wait for now. This is exactly what Jill was wanting. I'll be refining this as we go along...

If anyone was conserned about my sanity..... I had to put this here....It's a rare bit of film of the VERY GREAT Ivor Cutler.

I think to trully get into his poetry and songs you have to first listen to them while very drunk (I did) but after that they will always make you smile.

My favs are his "Life in a Scotch Sitting Room" monologs but his daft songs just crack me up

I really like John Boutte's voice, and really enjoy this band, featuring some of the Neville greats from New Orleans. The sound is a little choppy on this, but still shows the performance.

Here is a strange one for you. I went to see Rammstein in Nottingham two years ago and was blown away with their blend of German industrial rock.Fantastic guitar riffs that drag you in kicking screaming and laughing all the way.I dont speak any German at all and after reading a few translations it probably for the best...... but I still enjoy this band..... Oh I want to be a little miner LOL..... Twisted? Me? No!

Project Status Update FLASH Tutorial

I've posted a FLASH tutorial, to show you how to update your project status, so that when users browse the status pages, they see updated status and recent mix files. it's easier that you might thing to do this. Also I've turned the ability to post messages (updates) back on for the members, so everyone is able to post, but I am moderating the posts so only the messages that are for status updates will go through. This effectively returns the status update system to active status, but now with a filter so only appropriate message go out.

Have you seen the new BBCiPlayer. You can play old TV programmes for 7 days after they have been broadcast. You can play from the stream or you can download the programme for PC but not Mac yet. There was a programme on Sunday (go to television on the left and then page 3) about how to make a successful pop song which I thought was very interesting. You need the latest version of Flash player to play from the stream. You can get this by going to accessibility (top left) and then to question 'How to play video from stream which will give you the Flash player link.

Here is a flash tutorial, on how to add the smilie graphics to a NEW TOPIC here in the discussion blog. A person needs to be a member of this blog to post a new topic, and LOGGED INTO THIS BLOG. If you have met all of those requirements, you can post a new topic using the smilies. They make it a lot more fun when posting here.

HINT: actually these messages support pretty much all html, including "iframe", and flash, so if you know anything about html you can do quite a bit in the topic starters.

HAVE YOUR SOUND ON LOW when you click this, and it's recommended to put your browser in FULLSCREEN MODE when this starts to get the full effect. This is a free windows program that converts mp3 to wav (and many other formats if you get the codecs for them from the codec page). It's a very handy setup, and integrates itself into windows, so that you can convert an mp3 just by right clicking on it. If you don't have a good mp3 convertor this one is highly recommended!

MULAB multi-track software

I've downloaded this free software to check it out. It seems quite extensive for FREE SOFTWARE. I mean it's not going to beat out SONAR, or CUBASE, but it's not too shabby. The free version is limited to 8 tracks, but you can do a lot with 8 tracks. I have been considering creating some video tutorials to put up for this, to help get beginners going. There is something to be said for having a common software too. I don't intend to stop using sonar, but I could see using this as a secondary software that we all have in common. One cool thing about it is that it has a Mac version. So we'd be directly interfaced with Mac people? I mean for free you can't really go wrong. Since I've downloaded it, and poked around with the docs, I've figured out how to do pretty much everything we'd need it for here. Any thoughts?

What can I say about Jon Crosby except that in my opinion he is one of the best composers I have ever heard. When I first experienced the self titled VAST album I was blown away with his use of eastern and monastical samples. When you listen on a good system there is so much activity in the high and very low freq ranges that you would completely miss normally it keeps you coming back for more.
I have put the video clip "Touched" below as a good example but I would recommend that you check out his track "pretty when you cry" on youtube. I didn't put it here as the official vid is rather disturbing but brilliant all the same.

If I am ever able to produce material like this guy I will be happy.

Do you remember casbox magazine. It was supposed to have been an american music mag. It has statrted again as an online site in collaboration with IAC so it lists the Indie Charts. DirgeK is there as she is still no 1 in R & B charts with Coming Home. She may become well known in America !
